NAIROBI (2003) - A baby hippopotamus that survived the tsunami waves on the Kenyan coast has formed a strong bond with a giant male century-old tortoise, in an animal facility in the port city of Mombassa , officials said.
The hippopotamus, nicknamed Owen and weighing about 300 kilograms (650 pounds), was swept down Sabaki River into the Indian Ocean , then forced back to shore when tsunami waves struck the Kenyan coast on December 26, before wildlife rangers rescued him.
"It is incredible. A-less-than-a-year-old hippo has adopted a male tortoise, about a century old, and the tortoise seems to be very happy with being a 'mother'," ecologist Paula Kahumbu, who is in charge of Lafarge Park , told AFP.
"After it was swept and lost its mother, the hippo was traumatized. It had to look for something to be a surrogate mother. Fortunately, it landed on the tortoise and established a strong bond. They swim, eat and sleep together," the ecologist added.
"The hippo follows the tortoise exactly the way it follows its mother. If somebody approaches the tortoise, the hippo becomes aggressive, as if protecting its biological mother," Kahumbu added.
One zoo in southwest China has its hands full with 16 baby pandas. The Sichuan Wolong Panda Protection and Breed Center is dealing with the results of a breeding boom -- 16 pandas have been born since July, 2006. The brood includes five sets of twins.

These baby bears are just way too cute for words!
This is a liger named Hercules who lives at the Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species (T.I.G.E.R.S.) in Myrtle Beach.
A liger is the offspring of a male lion and a female tiger. The opposite case, the offspring of a male tiger and a female lion, is known as a tigon.
Hercules was the result of an accident rather than deliberate breeding.
He is three years old - still a baby,
stands 10 feet tall on his hind legs,
At maturity he is expected to reach 12 feet in length and weigh about 1,250 lbs. He eats about 20 lbs. of meat per day, and he can consume up to 100 lbs of food in one sitting

Isn't this sweet? I do not know the story behind these pictures, but the love is evident.
Wow!
I found this image at Non-Violent Planet News. Here's the story on these two. They're an odd couple in every sense but a monkey and a pigeon have become inseparable at an animal sanctuary in China.
The 12-week-old macaque - who was abandoned by his mother - was close to death when it was rescued on Neilingding Island, in Goangdong Province.
After being taken to an animal hospital his health began to improve but he seemed spiritless - until he developed a friendship with a white pigeon.
The blossoming relationship helped to revive the macaque who has developed a new lease of life, say staff at the sanctuary. Now the unlikely duo are never far from each other's side.
